The example starts at 5% before fees. This is an assumption, not an expected return. Try negative returns too; losses are possible.

What sits behind the numbers?

Contributions arrive at the end of each month and stay fixed. The starting amount is invested immediately. We convert the effective annual return into a monthly rate. The annual fee is applied multiplicatively: (1 + return) × (1 − fee) − 1.

Today’s-money value discounts the final balance by the assumed annual inflation rate. No tax, pension tax relief, withdrawals, dealing fees or account contribution limits are modelled. For a Junior ISA, check the current allowance before paying in.

Real returns, fees and inflation vary. The smooth chart cannot show the path investments will actually take. Results are rounded to the nearest pound and are not a promise.
